Overview of Early Warning System

The National Health Amendment Act requires the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) to monitor risk factors in health establishments in order to identify serious deficiencies that could endanger the health and safety of service users. The purpose of this Early Warning System (EWS) is to take action in time to protect users of health services.

Serious breaches of norms and standards must be reported to the Minister of Health without delay.

The OHSC envisages that the EWS will collect information from a variety of sources, including health establishments, community monitoring systems, other regulatory bodies and the mass media.

Adverse conditions, detected through the EWS, could result in the inspection of the relevant health establishment(s) or the initiation of an investigation.
